A Birth Story and Coming Home

I know everyone is going to be sick of posts about our little guy, but when you have such cute kids you can't help but take a million pictures! I've had a lot of requests for more details, so here is a little more about his birth. I went into labor (after running up and down the stairs 20x) around 11:15 PM on Sunday night. I wasn't sure I was really in labor because it wasn't that painful and it was very different from my experience with Abe. Finally after an hour, Ken convinced me to call the doctor and he told me to go ahead and go to the hospital to be checked. Tami came to pick up Abe and then we headed out. We were laughing and joking the whole way and I was very convinced that they would send me right back home. I wouldn't even let Ken drop me off, I just had him park and we walked in. It was around 1:30 when they took me in and hooked me up to all the machines. At this point I am really still not in pain and sure they'll send me home. The nurse was going to check to see how dialated I was and told me that she'd wait until my contraction ended so I was more comfortable, the funny thing being I didn't even know I was having a contraction! I was dialated to a 5 and 90% effaced, so my nurse said she'd send in the IV nurse. At this point I surprisingly asked her, "You mean I'm not going home?" She reassured me that I was having my baby that day. My response, "Hallelujah!" My doctor broke my water and I had 2 or 3 strong contractions before my epidural. A little after 5 I began to push and at 5:53 Tyler was born. What a miracle. His first name, Tyler, comes from a very good childhood friend of mine that passed away when I was 8. His middle name, Asahel (pronounced Ace - elle), is Ken's maternal grandfather. We came home from the hospital yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon and are beginning our life as a family of 4. It has been really nice to have my mom here and for Ken to have time off work (he gets a week of paternity leave now and another week when his parents come). Abe still loves Tyler and is constantly giving him hugs and kisses. Tyler is having some trouble adjusting to nursing, but he is a very calm and laid back baby. We are so grateful to have our healthy, beautiful baby boy. A little smile.
My handsome boys!Madi & Aunt Tami come to visit! Getting ready to go home! Bringing Tyler inside for the first time.

A Surprise Baby Shower!

For the last year I've been attending a Book Club with my neighbor, Jill, who lives across the street. Tonight was our May meeting and they surprised me with a wonderful baby shower. The theme was Baby's First Library (isn't that clever for a book club?!?) and everyone got me wonderful board books for the new baby. Jill made me the cute Diaper Wreath. We played some great games, had yummy food, and even talked about book we read for the month! Thanks girls! I had a great time.

In the Blink of an Eye...

I must admit, I got a little teary eyed last night as I looked at this: Why might you ask? This is an empty crib. Empty because my little boy has officially begun to sleep in his new Big Boy bed. I can't believe that I am just over 3 weeks away from having another child and that Abraham is old enough to leave his crib behind. Where did the time go? He has done a good job in his new bed so far, be we are expecting this "honeymoon" period to end at some point. On Mother's Day I reflect on what a priviledge it is to be a mother. Sometimes as I change my fifth poopy diaper of the day, clean up toys for the 7th time and build a block tower just so Abe can knock it down, I wonder if I've really made something of my life. Inevitably though, when that happens, Abe will randomly give me a kiss, or climb into my lap, say a new word, or call out "Mama!" just because he wants me around and I realize that I am making more of my life than I could in any other way. I'm responsible for teaching and loving that little boy. For teaching him the Gospel. Teaching him to love and care and serve. To all my wonderful friends and family who read our blog, I wish you a very happy Mother's Day!

Saturday Fun!

Ken and I had a fun Saturday this past week. My good friend Amy and I had tickets to see Clark Howard live in Durham. As self pronounced Frugal Masters, we had to take advantage of the opportunity! Then, Ken won tickets to see the premiere of the new Star Trek movie from our local newspaper. Of course, the events overlapped, but luckily for us, Amy's husband graciously volunteered to let Abe come over and hang out with him and their boys while we were gone. Luckily for Amy's husband, it was right at naptime and Abe slept the whole time he was there! Ken and I both had a really great time at our events and it was a busy, but very fun Saturday! Ken wore this to pick up his friend who went to the movie with him, fortunately unfortunately it was too hot to wear the whole time. Live long and prosper!

This is the best shot of Clark I could get! He was so energetic and just a nice guy.

Cowabunga, Dude!

Ken and I decided we'd better take advantage of the time we have left before another baby enters our home and had some people over to play our favorite 80's games! Luckily, we've done this before so we didn't have to worry too much about decorations or planning. Our biggest challenge was finding 80's maternity clothes and believe it or not, just by going through the costume room we came up with some! They were so rockin' I'll even gladly post the pictures! The winners got some great 80's prizes and the losers had to serenade us on karaoke with a favorite 80's song. The karaoke started to get out of control when the Village People came out singing "Macho Man", but amazingly Abe slept through that and a fantastic (if I say so myself) rendition of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"! Thanks to everyone who came, we had a blast to the past! Pretty sassy couple. Everyone came with awesome clothes and accesories. Levi's Magnum PI smile was killing me!Megan won the costume contest though with her amazing Bedazzled jean pants suit.

Girls having fun. The Village People

Hands off ladies! This one is my Macho Man!
