Mad Eye Rexy

Rex had his eye surgery at Duke on Wednesday. We were the first surgery of the day so we had to be there at 7:00 AM. Luckily Ken's parents had arrived the night before and were able to take care of Abraham and Tyler for us. Rex did awesome before surgery. Even though he was quite hungry, he hardly cried and was such a good baby. When Tyler had tubes put in at 8 months and then his tonsils out in July coming out of anesthesia was such a nightmare. Rex was wonderful and didn't even cry at all. We'd been told that because of his age he'd have to spend the night there under observation, but he did so well that they let us come home! Hooray. He slept quite a bit the first day, but since then has been pretty normal. He gets 9 eye drops a day, but only 1 of them burns a little when it goes in, the others aren't painful at all. We go back to Duke on Wednesday to have his eye checked and be fitted for his contact lens. Once he has the lens, he won't need the patch any longer. We are so happy that things have gone so well and feel so grateful that we were able to find and correct his problem so early.

This is Rex shortly after we got home (we forgot to bring our camera in with us and so we don't have any pictures of him in his little gown, you'll have to take my word for it that he looked really cute). This is his first patch (yes it is pink, they were out of blue) and it was really bulky. They took it off the next day and put on the one he wears now, which is much easier to change and clean and much smaller.

He has to wear the arm braces so that he won't bother his eye. He is pretty good at worming his way out of them and immediately goes for his eye when he can reach it. The nurses at the hospital call the braces "no no's"

This is him 48 hours after surgery. Smiling and happy ... just how we like him!

He looks cute. How does he handle the braces? Does it seem to bother him when he sleeps?

He is a cute guy. Glad he is milder natured. It will be nice when this is all over and he has his permanent lense only a few years away.
